Youths Associations Receive Awards for their Innovative Social Enterprises

Never Again Rwanda has awarded nine projects with cash prizes as part of its 2017 Innovation Request for Proposals in a societal healing and participatory governance for peace project.

Fifty four proposals were submitted.

Each innovative youth associations was awarded Rwf 500,000 each in a societal healing and participatory governance for peace project by Never Again Rwanda.

The award winning youth associations were Dukoranumurava from Nyamagabe district, Abasangiragendo Development Fund from Huye district, Youth Pillars Association from Huye district, Youth vision for peace from Musanze district, Mwanga troupe from Nyarugenge district, One family from Gasabo district, Rwanda we want from Gasabo district and Never Again Imfura from Kicukiro district.

The awarded projects were selected basing on project sustainability, peace building conscious, creativity, authenticity, originality and being income generating.

Abasangiragendo from Huye distict told Rwanda Eye that they are excited about the capital they have been given because they will be able to implement their project of bringing a hair salon near to their community.

“It usually takes one an hour walk to be able to reach to a nearby hair saloon, with the Rwf 500,000 we’ve been given, we are going to start a saloon near to our community,” Jean Claude Urengejeho said.

Besides Abasangiragendo’s project, other different projects were presented; Mwanga troupe from Nyarugenge district which will be preaching peace through theater and drama, Rwanda we want from Gasabo district will be dealing with the fashion industry where they will be making clothes to offer to genocide survivors, Youth Pillars Association from Huye district will specialize in soap making to ensure good hygiene to the society among others.

This youth innovation competition’s aim is to encourage youth to develop projects to respond to the needs of their communities as Dr. Joseph Nkurunziza, the country director of Never Again said.

“This competition will reduce the level of poverty among youth and also equip youth with skill to develop community oriented activities,” Dr. Nkurunziza said adding that it is going to be an annual event.

So far, Rwf 15 million is the total that has been used during the implementation of the first phase as Nkurunziza revealed.

“In partnership with the Swedish embassy we have managed to fund the young associations with top ideas and we look forward do more,” he added.
