Rwanda’s Finance Minister Claver Gatate (R) and World Bank country director, Yasser El-Gamal (l) exchange files after sealing the road financing deal.

Rwanda and the World Bank today signed €75.9 million loan agreement to finance rehabilitation of Ngoma – Nyanza road.

Claver Gatete the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning on Monday signed a €75.9M credit agreement with the World Bank to finance the 130 km section between Ngoma – Nyanza districts.

The 130 km road is meant to be paved with tarmac to allow smooth public transport and trade between the South and the East without necessarily going through Kigali.

The construction works of this road will be carried out in two phases; the first phase which concerns the sealed deal is the 66 Km long Kibugabuga (Bugesera district) – Gasoro (Nyanza District).

The second phase – Ngoma – Bugesera (64km) will be financed by Japanese government.

At the signing event, Gatete said that rehabilitation of this road will ease movement of people and goods.

“The construction of Ngoma-Nyanza road is expected to ease free movement of people and goods in the east Africa region from Tanzania heading to Rwanda’s southern part to DRC,” said Minister Gatete.

Gatete also noted that 500,000 people are expected to benefit from the road construction while 500 citizens will get permanent jobs to maintain it.

The World Bank country director, Yasser El-Gamal praised Rwanda government for better management of development funds.
