Police in the City of Kigali arrested Nyirishema Theoneste, 31, and one only identified as Niyongombwa 55, in connection with possessing and circulating counterfeit currency notes. They were attested separately on November 21in Kicukiro and Gasabo districts, respectively.
According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Emmanuel Hitayezu, the police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, Niyongombwa was caught with forged 500$ while Nyirishema had Rwf38, 000.
“Nyirishema was arrested in Niboyi Sector while Niyongombwa was apprehended in Gatsata by the residents after he attempted to dupe someone using the forged money, and they called police to take up the case,” Supt. Hitayezu said.
Nyirishema’s arrest, he said, came after a mobile money agent suspected the authenticity of the currency she had been given to deposit on his account.
On noticing that the currency notes were fake, the agent called the local patrols, who apprehended the suspect.
The would be victim immediately informed the police who were on regular security patrol leading to his arrest.
He appealed to members of the public to always inform the police about any “suspicious individuals for quick response and investigations.”
He particularly advised mobile money agents to be vigilant especially in the late evening hours when such people attempt to dupe them to deposit money on their mobile accounts using forged currencies.
