Three sector leaders in sectors of Gahini (Kayonza) Mahama (Kirehe) and Nyarugenge (Bugesera) in the Eastern province of Rwanda have been arrested and detained over alleged embezzlement of government funds meant for the poor.
The arrested officials are alleged to have misused government funds in the Village Umurenge programme (VUP) which is meant to assist poor citizens to access health care and other benefits in the programme.
Provincial police spokesman, IP Emmanuel Kayigi, confirmed the developments and said that the arrested officials include village leaders in Ngoma sector and stated that they have been detained at separate police stations for investigations.
“We have received various embezzlement complaints from residents who have accused their leaders of using the VUP funds to their own benefits and some of the cases are still being received from various citizens” Kayigi said.
The arrests comes days after president Paul Kagame, on his recent citizen outreach visit in Rubavu district warned local leaders of the vice of misusing government funds meant for supporting residents to development, to their own use.
