Rwanda National Police (RNP) has called on operators of forex bureaus to always be on alert against people who may supply them with forged currencies.

The call comes after police in Nyarugenge District arrested one Jean Marie Vianney Nyandwi, over the weekend in Kimisagara Sector, as he attempted to change 3, 550 counterfeit Euros, approximately Rwf3 million at as forex bureau in Nyabugogo.

According to the Police Spokesperson for the City of Kigali, Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, the forex bureau attendant, after identifying that the currency notes were counterfeit, he tipped off the police operating in Nyabugogo, and the suspect was apprehended red-handed, immediately.

The suspect is currently held at Kimisagara Police station as investigation continues.

The spokesperson pointed out that although crimes related to currency counterfeit are rare, he warned of serious repercussion to anyone caught in this act.

“Forex bureaus, small businesses and dealers of telecom banking are the most targeted, and we urge these business groups and the business community in general, to always be vigilant and verify the currency notes they receive and always be quick to inform police to foil such crimes,” Supt. Hitayezu said.

“Making or possessing counterfeit money is a criminal offence and should be reported. RNP equally takes counterfeit of money as a serious crime that everyone should be part of to fight it.”

“We always sensitize Rwandans, especially those who handle cash on the job to always verify the authenticity of the notes before they agree to any transaction… such crimes are curbed through collaboration and partnership with police – and we commend all residents who provide  information that facilitate the investigations and arrests of suspects,” he said.

Article 604 of the penal code stipulates that any person who counterfeits or circulates forged currency is liable to a term of imprisonment between five to seven years and a fine two to ten times the value of the counterfeits.
