Rwanda police apprehends 34

Marijuana

Rwanda National Police (RNP) on Friday (13/01/2012) arrested 34 suspects in Nyarugenge District for selling and consuming marijuana. The Police confiscated more than 10 kilograms of the drug in the process.

The suspects were snitched in a week long operation aimed at cracking down on drug dealers and consumers. The move is part of the ongoing police efforts to deter drug consumption in youth by cracking down on dealers, suppliers as well as consumers. It is also part of firm resolutions from the anti drug and alcohol abuse campaign held in December last year.

Apart from the arrests, police has previously conducted anti-drug campaigns in schools highlighting the negative effects drugs have on their lives and encouraging youths to shun their consumption.

With the assistance from the public and community policing committees, police have been able to apprehend drug consumers who have in turn helped in cracking down on dealers. It has also increased vigilance at the country’s entry points to prevent smuggled drugs into the country.
