The Rwanda Development Board has launched a mandatory online registration for all business as a way of making it easy to start a business in Rwanda and reduce on the paper work that has previously entailed the process.

The move comes at a time when Rwanda has embarked on becoming a regional ICT hub, and last year signing a 25 year contract with the Korean Telecom, and rolling out a fiber optic project throughout the country.

In June, government signed an agreement with South Korea’s largest telecom company, Korea Telecom, to deploy a high-speed 4G broadband network across the country to ensure fast, reliable and cheaper Internet.

Since 2011, when the online business registration system was introduced, to 2013, over 4,000 businesses have registered using the online service.

Using both the basic electronic and online business registration system, a total of 11,288 businesses were registered in 2013.

RDB Registrar General, Louise Kanyonga says that transition to online business registration comes as part of several reforms aimed at making it easier to do business. Rwanda was also last year ranked top in the 2014 World Bank Doing business report.

“This will make it easier, cheaper, quicker and more convenient to register your business,” Kanyonga said.

Communication companies have made a significant contribution in the increased access to Internet and as key partner in information and communication services, MTN Rwanda this year 2014 plans to increase its internet access under its annual budget of $20 million.
