The Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) have promised to support and bring justice to the family of the young man who was allegedly killed by one of their medical officers identified as Maj Dr Aimable Rugomwa Mupenzi
The young man identified as Theogene Mbarushimana, 18, a student reportedly died after succumbing to injuries a day after he was allegedly beaten by Maj Mupenzi and his elder brother.
The fatal incident in which the student was allegedly beaten on the head, after being suspected to be a thief, took place on September 4, 2016 in Ubumwe Village, Rubirizi, Kanombe Sector, in Kicukiro District.
The deceased student has since been buried in Gicumbi district.
Both suspects, Maj. Mupenzi, a medic at Kanombe military hospital and his brother have since been arrested and the RDF says that the case will be investigated to bring justice to the family of the victim.
A delegation of RDF officers that visited the family of the deceased in Ubumwe Village, this September 7, 2016 said the act of their officer was a disgrace to the force and effective measures will be taken.
“It is so unfortunate that one of us has had to act like this, our duty is to protect, not harm citizens. It is saddening to lose a young man who was still in school and looking forward to better things for himself, his family and nation,” said Lt Col René Ngendahimana, the acting Defence and Military spokesperson.
The RDF delegation was composed of Brig Gen Dr Ephraim Rurangwa, in-charge of administration and personnel at RDF headquarters, and Brig Gen Dr Emmanuel Ndahiro, commandant of the Rwanda Military Hospital, Kanombe.
The officers assured that everything possible will be done to ensure that justice is done to the deceased’s family.
The officers also spent time with the family in Kanombe and passed on their condolences to the Jean Pierre Gahutu, the deceased’s paternal uncle.
Gahutu told the local press, that the family seeks justice even when it is a sad story that one of their sons was killed under circumstances which remain incomprehensible.
