The fatal incident in which the student was allegedly beaten on the head, after being suspected to be a thief, took place on September 4, 2016 in Ubumwe Village, Rubirizi, Kanombe Sector, in Kicukiro District.

“It is so unfortunate that one of us has had to act like this, our duty is to protect, not harm citizens. It is saddening to lose a young man who was still in school and looking forward to better things for himself, his family and nation,” said Lt Col René Ngendahimana, the acting Defence and Military spokesperson.

The RDF delegation was composed of Brig Gen Dr Ephraim Rurangwa, in-charge of administration and personnel at RDF headquarters, and Brig Gen Dr Emmanuel Ndahiro, commandant of the Rwanda Military Hospital, Kanombe.

The officers also spent time with the family in Kanombe and passed on their condolences to the Jean Pierre Gahutu, the deceased’s paternal uncle.

Gahutu told the local press, that the family seeks justice even when it is a sad story that one of their sons was killed under circumstances which remain incomprehensible.
