Poor service, hygiene hampering hotel sector growth in Musanze

Poor service delivery and lack of hygiene in restaurants and hotels is believed to be a major setback to the tourism activities in Musanze district, one of Rwanda’s pivotal tourist areas.

Musanze district is endowed with mountain Gorillas, volcanic mountains scenes, beautiful caves and lakes and Volcanoes National Park, among other adventures which attract many local and foreign tourists.

Musanze has since 2000 seen a sprout in numbers of lodgings, vocational rentals, restaurants, motel, and modern hotel building compared to the rest of the districts in the Northern Province.

However, the “Citizen Report Card 2016” complied by Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) indicates that hygiene standards in the area is rated below the national average standards.

The Citizen Report Card shows that Musanze is at 69.3% compared to the required 85 % standard for all districts at the national level.

“This has negative impacts on the districts development targets and below the average. Leaders need to consult citizens to get feedback on how to implement and improve the service sector” Espèrance Inshutiraguma, the RGB official said while presenting the findings to Musanze district leader.

Most of Musanze residents agree with the report findings with 67.7 % respondents saying that hygiene in restaurants and bars is very poor, while 67.2% of them also said that there is lack of general hygiene in homes.

Augustine Ndabereye , the vice mayor in charge of economic affairs said that these are issues which need to be taken seriously to revive the potential of the district and immediate measures are yet to be taken.
