Muhanga: Driver detained over attempted bribery

A driver was arrested on December 7 in Muhanga District for allegedly attempting to bribe a traffic officer with Rwf5, 000 to reverse a penalty on traffic-related offences.
 
Jean de Dieu 32 Utazirubanda, who is currently detained at Nyamabuye Police Station, had been found without a transport authorization of the charcoal he was at the time carrying.
 
The District Police Commander (DPC) of Muhanga, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Jean Bosco Karega, said that there is a tendency of people that cut trees for timber and burning charcoal illegally, either in Muhanga or use Muhanga as a transit route.
 
“These are tendencies that Rwanda National Police in general in fighting because of their impact on the environment. Same individuals can’t possess transport authorization permit because they know that what they are doing is illegal, and they try to bribe police officers to again buy their way out, which is also a crime punishable by the law,” CIP Karega said.
 
“In most cases, these trucks move at night; Police operates 24 hours and during the same night, we also managed to impound seven trucks that were transporting timber and charcoal without authorization permits,” he added.
 
He warned drivers and the public in general against such malpractices saying that fighting corruption.
