Traders in that market says lack of modern market prevents them from working daily.

Residents of Muganza sector in Rusizi district have appealed to concerned authorities to construct a modern market for them to ease sale of their produce.

Muganza Market serves hundreds of people selling sweet, Irish potatoes and bananas. Farmers complain that lack of market for their produce pushes them to sell at giveaway prices.

“Lack of market affects us as we are forced to sell our produce cheaply. Our sweet potatoes are displayed in the open. We want to sell the produce as quickly as possible to avoid waiting so long,” Muhawenimana Josepha, a farmer, said.

Muhawenimana admits that while sweet potatoes are source of income for his family, he believes he would sell more when the market is constructed.

The worst comes when it rains when everybody collects the goods and look for where to stand and keep the goods until it stops raining.

When contacted, Rusizi authorities acknowledged that the lack of modern market affects earnings of farmers. The Executive Secretary of Muganza Sector, Muganga Alain Emmanuel has told Rwanda Eye that “plans to build Muganza market are under review by the leaders of the district.”
