Under the “ICT Connect Schools” Project, MTN Rwanda Foundation today handed over 96 computers with three months free internet access to four Secondary Schools.
The project is part of the MTN Rwanda Foundation strategy that focuses on investment in education as well as the Company’s mandate to connect and empower communities.
The four schools connected are Kigarama Technical Secondary School in Ngoma (Eastern Province), Sumba Secondary School in Nyamagabe (Southern Province), College Officiel De Mburabuturo in Nyamasheke (Western Province) and Groupe Scolaire Rambura in Nyabihu (Western Province).
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mary Asiimwe, MTN’s Human Resources and Corporate Affairs General Manager said, “MTN Foundation’s ICT support is a sign of its commitment to pursue its vision of promoting ICT Education in Rwanda and leading the delivery of a bold, new digital world to our customers. MTN realises and understands the need for access to quality education for all and fostering ICT development in schools.”
Since the ICT Connect Schools project begun in 2012, MTN Foundation has already built 24 fully equipped computer labs out of 30 with the aim to cover all the districts in Rwanda.
This handover comes just two months after MTN’s annual 21 Days of Y’ello Care that saw the company install Solar Systems in rural schools, Construct Classrooms and embark on ICT Training for teachers under the theme “Investing in Education for All”.
“We will also be officially opening the 3 block Classrooms built at Ecole Primaire Kabagera in Kirehe District during the 21 Days of Y’ello Care to the students.
Education is one of the most important investments a country can make to its people and MTN hopes to impact the lives of millions of families and sustainably transform their future by opening them up to the world of opportunities that education offers,” added Asiimwe.
Over the years, through MTN’s CSR vehicle MTN Foundation, MTN has succeeded in implementing several projects, including the construction of school infrastructure and renovations, skills development and ICT capacity building in schools, the fight against Malaria & HIV/AIDS, medical insurance for disadvantaged groups, support to Genocide survivors, and income generating support to women cooperatives and socio-economic contribution to Agaciro Development Fund.
