Rwanda to partner in policy making

Parliamentary sitting: MIT will partner with Rwanda on making policies

The Jameel Abdul Latif Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), a research center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has agreed to support Rwanda’s policy making.

The initiative comes from the long standing relationship between Rwanda and MIT especially after President Paul Kagame invited the founders of J-PAL to share about evidence generated through the centre’s network of leading academics across the world.

Through increased use of rigorous research in policy making, the MIT center will use randomized evaluations to inform policy decisions, build capacity of senior Government policymakers, generate new evidence of important Rwandan programs, and jointly explore opportunities for funding to scale effective programs among others.

Kampeta Sayinzoga, the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury at the Ministry of finance said that the new research opportunity will help Rwanda to formulate policies that are backed by research and evidence.

Laura Poswell the executive director of J-PAL Africa said that partnering with Rwanda offers opportunities to share lessons from J-PAL’s research which would be valuable in policy making.

In May this year, the Government of Rwanda and J-PAL hosted a policy symposium which discussed the results of research studies particularly salient to the Rwanda context.

Last year, Rwanda and MIT hosted a symposium focusing on how to maximize the effectiveness of policies and programs in Rwanda by drawing on lessons from hundreds of randomized trials already conducted in many developing countries, including Rwanda.
