A man identified as Philbert Rutikanga has been arrested and detained in Gasabo District in connection with counterfeiting and distributing currency notes.

Rutikanga was arrested on September 17 in Remera Sector after he was reported by the would-be victim.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect was found in possession of fake notes amounting to Rwf9, 000, in Rwf5, 000 and Rwf2, 000 denominations.

Supt. Emmanuel Hitayezu, police spokesperson for the City of Kigali, said that the businessman, whom Rutikanga tried to purchase good from using fake notes, called police after authenticating that they were not real.

“Even a single fake note has its impact on the economy; it could be the only interest the person running a business, was going to get, and this puts him or her in a loss,” said Supt. Hitayezu.

He emphasized the need for the general public to know and have contacts of the nearest police officer or station, and other available communication channels they would reach out in case of need, for immediate response.

Article 601 of the penal code states that “any person who fraudulently counterfeits, falsifies or alters coins, which are legal tender in Rwanda or abroad, bills issued by the State and bearing its stamp or emblem, banknotes, authorised notes or any other related effects used in Rwanda or abroad, or any person who introduces or issues on the Rwandan territory bills or notes which are legal tender with knowledge that they are counterfeit or altered, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of more than five years to seven years.”
