A 30-year old man identified as Ajey Manzi has been arrested in Bugesera District in connection with counterfeiting and distributing currencies.
Manzi, who has been a wanted man and in hiding over similar crimes, was arrested on October 27 in Nyabagendwa Cell of Ririma Sector.
At the time of his arrest, he was also found in possession of counterfeit money amounting to Rwf141, 000 in Rwf5, 000 and Rwf2, 000 denominations.
He is currently detained at Ririma Police station pending further investigations.
Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province, Inspector of Police (IP) Emmanuel Kayigi said that Manzi has been in the hiding since October 26, when three women were arrested with fake currency notes and implicated him to be their supplier.
“On October 26, police in Bugesera arrested three women, who were circulating and using forged currency notes to buy goods. One of the women was at the time trying to shop while another one was using the fake notes to clear a bill of alcoholic drinks in a bar,” IP Kayigi said.
“Upon arrest, they named Manzi as their supplier and the following day when their relatives saw him [Manzi], they immediately informed local leaders and nearby residents, who apprehended him as he tried to flee again before calling the police in Ririma to take up the case,” he added.
He commended the residents for their community policing approach and warned against such malpractices.
“To break this malpractice, the business community requires utmost vigilance because that way, there will be no market for counterfeiters and when they try, through this partnership, they will be arrested.
He further appealed to the general public to always come forward with information of people suspected to be involved in either making or circulating fake monies.
