For many times, Eugénie Uwimana, a Kigali city resident, has been forced to get out of a public bus and board a motorbike whenever she reaches Kacyiru Bus terminal.
Uwimana’s problem is shared by hundreds of other passengers who use public buses via this two year-old Bus terminal.
The bus terminal- constructed in line with Kigali City master plan, has no public restrooms-hence leaving many passengers stranded with no option.
“I always decide to board motorbikes which run faster than buses in order to find a nearest restroom. The issue of a public toilette has raised serious concerns,” Uwimana told Rwanda Eye.
At least 1000 passengers use Kacyiru Bus terminal every day, according to terminal managers.
According to business owners surrounding the bus park, the issue has affected them especially on the sanitary part.
Umunezero runs a restaurant few meters away from the park. She told this website that she has faced an influx of passengers colliding with her clients over restrooms.
“Some even have to stand and wait for others using the restrooms. I am left with no option other than allowing them (passengers) to disturb my clients’ privacy,” said Munezero.
Apart from passengers suffering lack of public restrooms around Kacyiru Bus terminal, it is causing sanitary issues.
Jérémie Niyoyita, the Bus terminal manager told Rwanda Eye that he himself use a restroom at a restaurant where he eats from.
“I personally use the toilet of a restaurant own where I eat lunch. I have no idea which other option passengers and drivers use.”
Niyonita, however adds that he has written to Kacyiru sector authorities and Kigali city to deal with the issue.
In an interview with this website, Félix Kayihura-Executive Secretary of Kacyiru sector said the issue has been forwarded to city authorities and promised to solve it with immediate effect.
Most of Kigali city bus terminal and main parks are managed by Rwanda Federation of Transport Cooperatives (RFTC).
Kacyiru Bus terminal is located adjacent to Ministries of Education, Infrastructure, Local Government and different public institutions.
