President Paul Kagame has today laid a foundation stone to officially flag off construction of Bugesera International Airport.

“I am pleased to join you today to break ground for this important national project. We are as determined as you are to see this airport completed and operational,” the president -elect said shortly after laying a foundation stone.

In September 2016, Rwanda signed deal with Portuguese firm Mota Engil Engenharia e Construcao Africa to deliver this airport facility.

Once completed, Bugesera International airport will become Rwanda’s largest International Airport, serving commercial flights. It is also expected to boost the country’s economic growth and development.

When completed, it will complement Kigali International Airport, which operates its maximum capacity; “I look forward to celebrating the inauguration of the new airport in the not too distant future,” he said.

“The proposed airport will increase global connectivity as well as support the country’s ambition of becoming a hub for ICT-based services as well as a finance and transportation hub,” said Rwanda’s Minister for Infrastructure, James Musoni.

Mota-Engil Africa, a Portuguese-based firm, will develop the project under a public – private partnership on a 25 year concession and an optional 15 year extension

Construction has been planned in phases. The first Phase will cost $418 million, scheduled for completion by December 2018. After this phase, extension works will be undertaken worth $ 400 million, bringing the total cost of the project to $818 million.
