A Rwandan businessman Vincent Murekezi accused of participating in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi has been arrested in Malawi.

Murekezi was held Thursday after Rwanda National Prosecution spokesman Nkusi Faustin confirmed that they have been asking Malawi for the extradition of Murekezi since 2009.

Vincent Murekezi, who has previously used several aliases was early this year given a Malawian passport, having been naturalized as a citizen of Malawi back in 2013.

The country’s ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Principal Secretary Dalitso Kabambe confirmed that Malawi government received “several requests” for extradition of Murekezi.

in his home district he was tried in absentia by Gacaca court tried and given him a life sentence.

“Mr Murekezi has been arrest. He is being held at Area 30 police headquarters. Police are waiting for directives from government on the process of extradition,” a police officer said.

Central Region Police spokesperson Noriett Chihana was coy to comment on the matter, saying it was sensitive.

According Nyasa Times  law enforces stormed the house in the morning and picked the Rwanda genocide suspect.

Before being removed in the country, Murekezi will appear before court for an extradition hearing.

Murekezi allegedly acquired the Malawian passport number MA078171 in 2011 using the name Vincent M. Banda, a Malawian, born at Mbeya, Tanzania.

His Rwandan passport indicates the birth place as Ngoma-Huye in Rwanda. The passport number is PC 939663, the way it appears in a dossier by the Rwandan Government which names him as a suspect of the genocide.

Both passports show that Murekezi was born on January 6, 1962. The Malawi passport was issued in Blantyre on August 3, 2011 and is valid until August 2, 2021 while his Rwandan passport was issued on December 8, 2009 and expired on December 8, 2014.

Rwandan authorities were not immediately available for comment on the issue.
