Fuel prices shoot up as food prices lower

Beginning today Rwanda will experience an increase in fuel pump prices partly caused by the performance of the Rwandan franc against the dollar, the Minister for Trade and Industry, Francois Kanimba, has said.

The increase has been estimated at 3 percent, meaning that motorists will have to part with Rwf1, 030 a litre of super petroleum, and diesel instead of from Rwf1, 000, which has been the price since June..

The government is expected to monitor the changes and ensure consumer protection. In June this year, the government announced a reduction in fuel prices mainly due to the reduction in oil prices on the international market in the last three months.

Kanimba said that the current prices are most likely to remain until December. “Government is working on a number of initiatives to ensure a positive impact on the prices of fuel in the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, some food stuff prices have dropped especially prices of potatoes from Rwf250 to 200 per kilogram. Potatoes are widely consumed in Rwanda.
