An audit commissioned by Nyamasheke District has resulted into the arrest of four head-teachers, who are alleged to have embezzled about Rwf50 million from their respective schools.

The arrested head-teachers are Aloys Nzeyimana of Groupe Scolaire Nyanza, Nathanael Ruhumuriza of GS Banda; Jeremy Rangiro of Ecole Secondaire Rangiro; and Canisius Mukuzimana of EP Ruhengeri.

The Western Region Police Spokesperson, Chief Inspector of Police (CIP) Theobald Kanamugire, said that the arrest of the head-teachers on Monday followed an audit conducted by the district of Nyamasheke that unearthed the millions of money that was either embezzled or not accounted for in the four schools.

“The audit commissioned by the district was aimed at reviewing how effective school funds are used,” CIP Kanamugire said.

According to the audit report, Rwf11 million went missing in GS Nyanza, Rwf13.9 million in GS Banda; Rwf21 million in ES Rangiro; and Rwf3.1 million was not accounted for in EP Ruhengeri.

“The audit report directly pointed at the four head teachers although investigations are still underway,” said the spokesperson.

“This is, however, unfortunate; this is the money that was meant for the development and welfare of the schools and the education sector in general, but whoever is connected to the missing funds will be held accountable,” he noted.

Embezzlement, under article 325 of the Penal Code, is punishable with a term of imprisonment of seven to ten years and a fine of two to five times the value of the embezzled or destroyed property.
