Four Arrested for Passing Counterfeit Money

Four men have been arrested in Karongi District for allegedly circulating counterfeit currencies.

Police spokesperson for the Western region, Chief Inspector of Police(CIP) Theobard  Kanamugire said that the quartet was arrested separately with Rwf65, 000, all forged.

He identified the suspects currently detained at Rubengera Police station as Joseph Uwimana, 36, Jean Bosco Dusabimana, 23, Steve Gakwandi and Marcel Kamayirese, 35.

Joseph Uwimana was arrested with counterfeit notes amounting to Rwf55, 000, in Rwf5, 000 denominations.

“We first arrested Gakwandi and Kamayirese on July 4 with a combined Rwf5, 000, fake, which they were trying to use to buy commodities. The following, we arrested Uwimana and Dusabimana in the similar crime,” said CIP Kanamugire.

“Uwimana was trying to buy alcoholic drinks at a depot with the counterfeits when he was by the depot attendant, who immediately called the police and arrest the suspect at the scene with the exhibit,” he added.

Currency counterfeiting is a crime punishable under articles 601 to 605 of the penal code.

Article 601, partly states that any person who fraudulently counterfeits, falsifies or alters coins, which are legal tender in Rwanda or abroad, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of more than 5 years to 7 years.

Under article 603, any person, who knowingly acquires or receives legal tender and circulates them to any person, even if he/she is not one of counterfeiters of such monies, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of one to three years.

In article 604, any person who counterfeits or circulates forged currency is liable to a term of imprisonment between five and seven years and a fine between two time and ten times the value of the counterfeits.
