Direct support beneficiaries built a commercial house in their quest to self-reliance

Beneficiaries of ‘Direct support’, a component of Umurenge Vision Program (VUP) in Nyanza sector of Gisagara district built a commercial storey building worth, Rwf45 million for income generation.

Direct support is the fund given to the poorest households.

The beneficiaries formed “Amizero” cooperative and constructed a storey building that is expected to generate Rwf320.000 per month.

“It’s a good example of self reliance. Youth should be inspired to create jobs for sustainable development,” said Leandre Karekezi, mayor of Gisagara district.

‘Amizero’ cooperative has 248 members and each receives between Rwf7500 and Rwf21000 monthly as direct support.

Vision 2020 Umurenge Programme (VUP) is an Integrated Local Development Program to Accelerate Poverty Eradication, Rural Growth, and Social Protection.

It is an initiative by the Government of Rwanda (GoR) in collaboration with development partners and NGOs.

The Vision 2020 Umurenge Program (VUP) uses the existing decentralization system and leverages technical and financial assistance to accelerate the rate of poverty reduction in Rwanda with an aim to eradicate extreme poverty by 2020.

The VUP programme has three main components; Direct support, Public works offered to the poorest household seasonally and Microcredits that are given to the poorest to start up small businesses.
