Inspector of Police (IP) Jean de Dieu Kayihura, the Police spokesman in the Eastern Province said that the information on the robbery was leaked by Ecobank Head Office officials.

ECOBANK Nyagatare branch this morning woke up for normal business only to find Rwf96million missing.

Sources have told Rwanda Eye that the stolen client’s deposit were allegedly stolen by bank employees- the acting branch manager and his Operations Manager.

The stolen money was in a bank safe containing Rwf77, 849,574, $17,725, €3,575 and GBP200- which is equivalent to Rwf96, 424,324 by the current exchange rate.

Inspector of Police (IP) Jean de Dieu Kayihura, the Police spokesman in the Eastern Province said that the information on the robbery was leaked by Ecobank Head Office officials.

At the scene of crime, our reporter indicated that there was no evidence of a break in through on the bank doors, and the two suspected Ecobank branch officials were missing since last Saturday.

“We are investigating the case, but the two officials remain prime suspects in the alleged robbery” Kayihura said.

Sources from bank staff indicate that the money was allegedly swindled on Saturday between 1pm and 2pm, after security cameras were switched off in the branch premises.

“The bank close at 1pm and all clients left. The two officials remained behind inside the bank doing accounts. At 4pm they asked the security guard to hand the bank keys to their housemaid, and they left” one of the staff said.

Both the acting manager and operations manager lived in the same compound at the bank premises.

Apparently, the Ecobank Nyagatare branch staff held a meeting on September 24th in which the staff were allegedly briefed on tentative operations pending the branch closure next year January 2018.
