Police in Gakenke District arrested a local resident suspected of selling and consuming cannabis.

Pacifique Hakizimana, 21, was arrested at his shop in Gakenke town at about 11pm, following a search both in his shop and at home where rolls of cannabis were recovered.

Hakizimana is also facing charges of attempted bribery after he attempted to offer a bribe of Rwf20, 000 to police officers, who had arrested him over the crime.

According to the Police spokesperson for the Northern Province Inspector of Police (IP) Innocent Gasasira, the District Police Unit (DPU) of Gakenke received a phone call from a concerned resident in Gakenke Sector of a certain man, who sells and consumes cannabis, whose acts were creating insecurity in the area.

“After receiving information, police officers were dispatched; they found the suspect in his shop, searched and found 11 pellets of cannabis in his clothes. They continued to his house where they also recovered other dozens of pellets,” IP Gasasira said.

“As a norm, police officers first took the suspect back to his shop to arrange and make sure that his shop is safe before taking him to the police station over drug-related crimes, but when they reached at the shop, he tried to seduce them with a bribe of Rwf20, 000 to unlawfully find his way out, which never worked out,” he added.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Hakizimana’s house had also been turned into a meeting point for buyers and abusers of cannabis.

“We appreciate the role of the public in policing and appeal for stronger partnership in identifying and arresting drug dealers and creating a bond that gives no pathway for drug traffickers,” he noted.
