CHAN 2018: Taifa Stars to Land Tonight for Amavubi Return Leg Clash

The Tanzania National men’s football team, Taifa Stars, arrives in the country tonight ahead of return leg first round qualifier of the Total African Nations Championships (CHAN) due on Saturday at Stade de Kigali, Nyamirambo.

The Tanzanian-outfit arrives at Kigali International airport on Wednesday night, 20h25 aboard a RwandAir flight from Kilimanjaro.

The team will stay at The Mirrors Hotel in Remera town for their entire duration in Kigali.

They are scheduled to train at Stade de Kigali on Thursday morning and Friday afternoon ahead of Saturday’s clash with Rwanda’s Amavubi stars.

Speaking to Tanzanian media, Taifa Stars head coach Salum Mayanga is assured Stars will advance despite a draw setback in the first leg clash.

Mayanga lauded players for the hard work despite failing to seal a win. He said, however, allowing visitors to score away an early goal was a grave mistake committed by the team.

“The match has ended in a draw, but this is not the best result to us. My main target right now is making sure all mistakes we committed are rectified before the return away match in Rwanda,” said the coach.

He said Kigali doesn’t pose threat to him and it’s from there Stars will advance. He said the opponents capitalized on the mistakes committed by Stars defenders to convert an early goal.

In the first leg, the Amavubi team secured the lead – and a potentially vital away goal – in the 18th minute when Dominique Savio Nshuti found the back of the net.

However, in the 34th minute, the Taifa Stars hit back to level the game at 1-1 through Himid Mao’s spot kick when Aimable Rucogoza handled Simon Msuva’s attempt in the box leading to a penalty.

To progress, Rwanda needs a goalless draw or a win to reach the last qualifying round.

The aggregate winner of the tie will face either South Sudan or Uganda in the final qualifying round for a ticket to the Kenya finals.
