amb-pauwels-arnoutThe Belgian ambassador to Rwanda, His Excellency Pauwels Arnout, on September 28, paid a courtesy call to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel K. Gasana at the Rwanda National Police (RNP) General Headquarters in Kacyiru, during which they discussed various issues related to cooperation.

The IGP briefed the ambassador on the RNP cross-border cooperation strategy and thanked the Belgian government for supporting RNP in varied policing disciplines.

In an interview, Amb Pauwels said: “We discussed cooperation between Belgium and Rwanda National Police. In the past, there used to be a programme where Belgium was helping Rwanda police in technical training and capacity building for Criminal Investigations Department.”

Belgium supported RNP through Belgian Development Agency (BTC) in a four-year programme worth €4 million that ended in 2014.

Most of the support was channeled to capacity building in crime investigations, forensic and logistics, through which at least 630 benefited from the programme.

“This was before my time and apparently it’s something that worked very well, so we were discussing to see how in the future we could continue this kind of partnership and continue supporting the policing development and professionalism in Rwanda,” Amb. Pauwels added.
