As the storm of the tight competition eased in the telcom sector, Airtel has yet ignited it, this time with the first ever cheapest internet bundles.
The sector’s number three by subscriber base has on Thursday announced a new data bundle dubbed Unlimi-Net as low as Rwf 30 a day and Rwf 150 and Rwf 500 for a month, the lowest ever in the data segment.
The bundle, according to Indrajeet Singh, Airtel’s Commercial director will help customers access to chat on Facebook and Twitter at an affordable cost and unlimited WhatsApp, the leading trends that are driving data usage.
“Airtel UnlimiNET is designed to enable Airtel customers remain connected to their social and professional networks all day without worrying about data running out,” Singh said
He adds, “Internet is an essential part of our everyday life. As a user, one wants constant and affordable supply of internet so as to remain connected to loved ones, study and work efficiently.”
The bundle becomes lowest to MTN’s Rwf 150 a day, Rwf 1000 a week and Tigo Rwf 100, Rwf 800 a week, taking dominance from Tigo in affordable internet bundles which forced MTN to increase its bundles from 12 hours to 24 hours.
“The Unlimi-Net bundle plans are based on emerging consumer insights and trends that show a substantial increase of data usage for both social and business needs,” he added
But the cheap data bundles are good news to customers who have been spending much on internet especially social media.
“I don’t normally browse a lot but my social media is always on and at times am forced to buy a pack of Rwf 800 to keep it on,” Roger Higiro, a student in Kigali said.
The sector has seen a growing trend in the use of internet with people using data growing up to 26 percent by end of 2015.
